Especially, the period after the death of Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir (1707) to 1770.

It seems that Jokers, Eunuchs, Conspirators, War Lords, Hitmen and the Fortune Tellers ruled, while the Mughal House was symbolic only, and 'Royal Court filled with Fawners' ...

What was the criterion for conferring Nobility?

The following excerpt will sum that up:-

'Mughal Courtiers were devoid of COMPETENCE, WISDOM and POLITICAL INSIGHT. Most of them were Mimickers, Jesters, and Flatterers par excellence ... One minstrel Amir Khan Anjaam was made Subedar of Allahabad with the title of Umdat Ul Mulk'.
